Ginger

Ginger is a plant with green-purple flowers and a fragrant underground rhizome. It is commonly used in cooking, as well as soaps and cosmetics. Several ancient texts have listed ginger being used for health-related purposes, including Greek, Roman, Sanskrit and Chinese readings.

Ginger has historically been used to treat stomachache, nausea and diarrhea. Today it is used for similar symptoms, and also for other nausea-related symptoms caused by motion, chemotherapy or pregnancy. It is also used for arthritis and osteoporosis. Some studies on the effectiveness of ginger have shown that it can be useful for nausea and vomiting, including pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting. It is uncertain whether ginger interacts with other medications.

Dosage amount varies depending on age and what it is being used for. Be sure to follow relevant directions on product labels and consult your pharmacist or physician or other healthcare professional before using.

›  Dietary supplements

Ginger root, both dried and fresh, can be used in the form of tablets, capsules, liquid extracts and teas.
