› What is it?
Bacopa monnieri is a perennial herb native to wetlands around the world and also known as water hyssop, brahmi, thyme-leafed gratiola, herb of grace and Indian pennywort. It’s a popular aquarium plant, as well as a staple of traditional Ayurvedic medicine.
› Health benefits
Although bacopa has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years, modern biomedical research about its potential health benefits is in its early stages. However, several high-quality studies have been conducted that show bacopa’s promise as a memory enhancer and in providing relief for anxiety, dementia, Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy.
› How much do I need?
The dose of bacopa depends on age, health and other conditions. There is not enough information to determine appropriate dose ranges, although doses used in studies ranged from 50 to 800 milligrams. Reported side effects include gastrointestinal upset. Be sure to follow relevant directions on product labels, and consult your pharmacist, physician or other healthcare professional before using.
