Bromelain is an enzyme extract from the pineapple plant that is used as a natural remedy to treat and prevent a variety of health issues.

Inflammation

As an anti-inflammatory compound, bromelain has been studied for its effectiveness in treating symptoms of osteoarthritis. A 2004 review article examined a number of studies that used bromelain to treat osteoarthritis of the knee and shoulder. The authors concluded that bromelain was effective at treating these conditions. However, more studies were needed to establish effective dosing.

A more recent review article published in 2017 found bromelain to be as effective as an NSAID (or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) at treatment post-surgical inflammation. Bromelain also had fewer side effects.

Digestion

As we age, digestive issues become more common. A lack of digestive enzymes is one cause of indigestion, which can result in symptoms of stomach upset, bloating and discomfort.

Supplementing with digestive enzymes, like those containing bromelain, can be an effective way to treat symptoms of indigestion and keep them at bay.

A 2006 review article found that bromelain was an effective herbal treatment when used by chronic sinusitis patients.

Another small pilot study also found bromelain effective when used by chronic rhinosinusitis subjects who had previously undergone sinus surgery.
