Phosphatidylserine (also known as PS) is a natural chemical produced by the body that is vital to brain function. While it can be consumed in the diet by eating soybeans and organ meats, supplementation with PS provides a range of health benefits. Here are a few with scientifically-proven results.

For Memory Loss

Phosphatidylserine has been studied for its ability to improve age-related memory loss. In a 2010 study, 78 elderly subjects with mild cognitive impairment began treatment with either phosphatidylserine or placebo for six months. At the end of the study period, subjects who supplemented with PS showed significant memory improvements when compared to the placebo group.

For Depression

Researchers have also looked at PS for its ability as a mood booster. In a 2015 study, elderly subjects with major depressive disorder who had not improved through use of antidepressants took a supplement containing PS and omega-3 fatty acids (also known for its brain health benefits). At the end of 12 weeks, all of the subjects showed significant improvements in their depression symptoms.

For ADHD

In a blinded study of children who were diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) but had not yet received any drug treatment, researchers found that supplementation with phosphatidylserine for two months significantly reduced ADHD symptoms.

The supplement was well tolerated with no side effects, suggesting a safe natural alternative to drug therapy for treating this common disorder.
