Cat’s claw is a woody tropical vine that grows in the Amazon rain forests and other areas of Central and South America. The most common type of cat’s claw used as a supplement is known as U. tomentosa. Usage of this supplement dates back to the Inca civilization.

Cat’s claw has been used for help with inflammation, contraception, cancer and viral infections. Today it is used as a dietary supplement for a variety of ailments, including viral infections (such as HIV and herpes), Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, arthritis, diverticulitis, peptic ulcers, colitis, gastritis, hemorrhoids, parasites and leaky bowel syndrome. Few side effects have been reported, but pregnant women should avoid usage. There is no conclusive scientific evidence on the efficacy of cat’s claw, as there have been very few studies on the subject.

Dosage amount varies depending on age and what it is being used for. Be sure to follow relevant directions on product labels and consult your pharmacist or physician or other healthcare professional before using.
