According to a 2015 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) publication, the prevalence of obesity among adults in the United States between 2011 and 2014 rose to a whopping 36.5 percent. And it is estimated that half of Americans will be affected by diabetes or obesity by the year 2020.

There are a number of factors involved in losing and maintaining a healthy weight, including stress, food intake, food allergies, exercise and more.

While most probiotic research revolves around immunity and digestive system health, a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition showed promising results in the ability of probiotics (namely the Lactobacillus rhamnosus strain) to help with weight loss.

Additional studies are needed in this area, but many health practitioners are recommending probiotic supplements to their patients to support healthy digestion, metabolism and to maintain a healthy weight.

We recommend Culturelle Probiotics Digestive Health Daily Probiotic, which contains the Lactobacillus rhamnosus strain.

Another potent probiotic with six targeted probiotic strains known to optimize digestion and metabolic function is Better Body from Hyperbiotics.

Better Body uses a delivery system called BIO-tract that protects the live probiotic organisms from stomach acids and makes this supplement 15 times more effective than most probiotics.

Not keen on taking a supplement? You can also get probiotics from certain foods. Look for yogurt that contains the “Live & Active Cultures” seal, or try kefir, a fermented drink with loads of probiotic benefits.

Kimchi and other pickled cabbage are also good options to up your probiotic intake, as is kombucha.
