In addition to staying fit, keeping stress levels in check and not smoking, a well-balanced diet and supplements to fill in dietary gaps go a long way to towards optimizing heart health.

Potassium

The American Heart Association considers potassium an essential nutrient to reduce heart disease risk.

Why? The average American consumes way too much sodium on a daily basis, which can lead to high blood pressure also known as hypertension. Hypertension can increase your risk for heart disease or stroke when left unmanaged. Potassium lessens the effect of sodium in the bloodstream and can help keep blood pressure in check.

Dietary surveys have shown that Americans consume less potassium than the recommended 4,700 milligrams per day. Foods such as bananas and sweet potatoes are a good source of potassium.

A potassium supplement can help you make sure you’re not falling short.
