Echinacea is an herb native to the United States and was used by American Indians in traditional medicine. There are nine known species, all of which can be found in the U.S.

›  Health benefits

Echinacea is used to help with the common cold and other infections. It is believed that it stimulates the immune system to more effectively fight off infections and help shorten the duration of a cold. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health is currently funding research on the effects of the herb on the human immune system. Side effects of taking echinacea can include stomach pain or nausea.

›  How much do I need?

Dosage amount varies depending on age and what it is being used for. Be sure to follow relevant directions on product labels and consult your pharmacist or physician or other healthcare professional before using.

›  Dietary supplements

The roots and above-ground parts of the plant are used fresh or dried to make tea, juice, extracts, capsules and tablets.
