How to Build the Best Plant-Based Burger

Plant-based burgers are having a moment. Whether you’ve added them to your diet for health reasons or to make a positive impact on the environment, one thing is probably true: You’re always looking for ways to get creative with how you serve them.

Wendy McMillan, a plant-based recipe developer, can relate. “It’s actually a lot simpler than it might sound to add some excitement to any plant-based patty,” she says. “In fact, all you have to do is think about a meal or type of cuisine you like, then dream up ways you can translate that in burger form.

To help you think outside the bun and take your next plant-based burger night beyond the standard lettuce, tomato and vegan cheese, McMillan shares her ideas on how to build a unique plant-based burger.

Vegan Pizza
Burger

Top your plant-based burger with basil and greens, marinara sauce and a layer of dairy-free cheese. Heat the cheese under the broiler or on the grill to get that bubbly gooeyness. To make your own vegan cheese, create a faux parmesan by combining 3/4 cup raw cashews or almonds with 1/4 cup nutritional yeast in a food processor, and add a dash of garlic powder and sea salt.

Vegan Pizza Burger

Spicy Thai
Burger

Spread a layer of Thai curry sauce over your plant-based burger in the final few minutes of grilling. You can make a batch of your own curry sauce by mixing a can of regular or lite coconut milk, 1 tablespoon Thai red curry paste, 1/4 cup peanut butter, 1 tablespoon coconut aminos and 2 tablespoons lime juice, simmering to thicken as needed. Once your burger is on the bun, top with a simple slaw seasoned with coconut aminos, soy or tamari sauce and lime juice to taste.
