Forget fried chicken—fruits, vegetables and other high-fiber edibles may be the real comfort foods.
A study of nearly 17,000 adults, published in 2018 in the journal Nutrition, found that people with a high fiber diet (21 grams per day) were less likely to show symptoms of depression than those who ate less. Americans, on average, eat 15–18 grams of fiber per day—well below the 25–34 daily grams that the U.S. Dietary Guidelines recommend.
