How to Make Compound Butter

Take your cooking to the next level with a flavoring sauce so uncomplicated, you’ll be confounded!

Sometimes all it takes to transform a mediocre meal into a dazzling dish is to add a little extra flavor. We’ve got one of the easiest flavor hacks of all: compound butter.

What is Compound Butter?

Compound butter is softened, often whipped butter that’s blended with various combinations of ingredients such as fresh herbs, garlic, spices or any seasoning you’d use to add flavor.

To make compound butter, simply mix softened butter together with the flavor enhancers that will best complement the dish. To infuse the butter with the most flavor possible, finely chop or mince ingredients like garlic, chives or fresh herbs, and purée fresh fruit.

Once all ingredients are thoroughly mixed, scrape the butter onto parchment paper or plastic wrap and roll it into a log. Chill for at least two hours.

For a compound butter that’s fluffy and airy, use a hand mixer to whip the butter together with the chosen ingredients. Try a high-quality plant-based butter such as Miyoko’s European Style Cultured Vegan Butter to add a depth of flavor and richness.

Sometimes referred to as a “finishing sauce” a compound butter mixture is a simple way to heighten a dish, elevating it to restaurant-style levels. Although basic in concept, the possible flavor combinations are countless.
