Concerns about COVID-19 have many of us looking for ways to naturally boost the immune system. With cold and flu season just around the corner in the midst of a pandemic, natural remedies we can add to our arsenal are a must. Consider adding elderberry supplements to your lineup.

Elderberry supplements come in all varieties—gummies, syrups, tablets, lozenges and powders to name a few—and there is plenty of research behind how this tart berry works to enhance immune health.

A 2019 study found that the elderberry helps the body fight the influenza virus by having a direct antiviral effect. The researchers attributed this antiviral activity to the anthocyanin content in the dark purple berries, a powerful antioxidant that gives the berry its color.

Another study found elderberry supplements to be effective in reducing the duration of the common cold by two days in air travelers when compared to the group who received a placebo. The subjects also had fewer cold symptoms than those in the placebo group.

Nature’s Way uses Haschberg variety elderberries in all of their supplements, from the Styrian region of Austria—a mineral- and nutrient-rich area known for its grape growing.
