With a busy work schedule and trying to fit in time for the gym, Denver-based Daniel “D” Katz relied on protein bars to keep him going between meals and after hard workouts. But the only bars he could find contained whey (a dairy protein), which gave him terrible stomachaches. Katz had been a serial entrepreneur since age 12—from operating an eBay/Craigslist electronics business to reptile breeding to making energy drinks—so after reading statistics about the number of Americans (60 percent) who have trouble digesting milk protein, Katz got an idea for his next business, No Cow.

No Cow bars are high-protein, low-sugar and dairy-free (hence the name), made with a proprietary blend of almonds and pea and rice protein, and sweetened with stevia and monk fruit. And they’re a mere 180 to 210 calories per bar.

“I eat very healthy, and I love creating a product that can have an impact on other people’s lives who struggle with the same issues as I do or are in search of a healthy protein bar,” Katz says, adding that his bars are great for a light breakfast, anytime snack or post-workout fuel.

Flavors include Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip (“I love peanut butter,” Katz says), Chocolate Fudge Brownie and Lemon Meringue Pie, with more coming out in the next few months. Check them out at your local Kroger store, or read more about the company at nocow.com.
