When Sahale Shacks first started producing its lines of bean, nut and fruit snack mixes, the company—which prides itself on artisan manufacturing—set out to create a multisensory snacking experience through texture and flavor.
First, nuts like cashews, peanuts, almonds and pecans are dry-roasted using hot air—never oil—to achieve that perfect crunch. “We really wanted to layer diverse textures into the Bean + Nut Snack Mixes,” says Natalie Masters, research and development for Sahale Snacks. “Consumers are really interested in a lot of different crunch and crisp profiles.”
Next comes the flavor. Between culinary tours of restaurants around Seattle, where the brand is headquartered, and international travel, Sahale Snacks pulls inspiration from every corner of the globe. “[The founders] traveled the world, not only to explore new cultures, but also to find just the right ingredients to make our snacks come alive,” says Julia Danicic, project management for Sahale Snacks.
“Once we have those flavors or that restaurant dish or that cuisine identified,” adds Masters, “that becomes our gold standard. If you were sitting down eating that dish in a restaurant, what would your experience be like? Then we choose what those hero ingredients are.”
